The historic burying ground of the early Republic, ten blocks from the Capitol — J. Edgar Hoover, John Philip Sousa, and dozens of members of Congress rest here. Memor maps all 35 acres for visitors and researchers.
Congressional Cemetery holds the cenotaphs — honorary monuments — of many senators and congressmembers who were not actually buried here, giving it a uniquely political character among historic cemeteries. It was the burial site for several early American notables before Arlington opened, and remains an active burial ground today.
